One of the most beautiful of all butterflies, its underside is a soft brown, while the topside of the wing is black with a highly unusual patchwork of purple, green, and blue spots. These spots are actually “windows” to pigments within the wings; the surface scales are non-pigmented. Found, in the wild, only in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea at elevations between 4000 and 8000 feet above sea level
All of the butterflies used in this jewelry are farm-raised, mainly in South America by small farms dedicated to conservation. For every small butterfly farm that makes a living, less Amazon rain forest is cut down. Butterfly farming practices protect the wild butterfly population—the alternative to butterfly farming is netting wild butterflies. These farms are also suppliers to the US based butterfly houses where guests go to interact with live butterflies. Majority of tropical butterflies have a lifespan of less than 3 weeks. In the farming process, they live out their entire life-cycle protected from predators, as the farmers need to collect the eggs for their live exhibit customers.
Dimensions: Since two two butterflies are alike, no pair of earrings are exactly alike either. Product may vary slightly in color and size.
Approx. 2" long, including sterling silver earwires.
