With it's striking coloring, the adult monarch butterflies possess two pairs of brilliant orange-red wings, featuring black veins and white spots along the edges. It's species name, in Greek, means "sleepy transformation", evoking it's ability to hibernate and metamorphize. They are as American as apple pie, having once been found in backyards across the country.
All of the butterflies used in this jewelry are farm-raised, mainly in South America by small farms dedicated to conservation. For every small butterfly farm that makes a living, less Amazon rain forest is cut down. Butterfly farming practices protect the wild butterfly population—the alternative to butterfly farming is netting wild butterflies. These farms are also suppliers to the US based butterfly houses where guests go to interact with live butterflies. Majority of tropical butterflies have a lifespan of less than 3 weeks. In the farming process, they live out their entire life-cycle protected from predators, as the farmers need to collect the eggs for their live exhibit customers. Handcrafted by Petal Connection in California.
Dimensions: Since two two butterflies are alike, no pair of earrings are exactly alike either. Product may vary slightly in color and size.
