Vibrant with it's intense yellow and black markings, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is one of the most common and beautiful eastern butterflies. Individuals can be found anywhere east of the Mississippi river and a bit farther west into the Great Plains states. There are also populations in several Mexican states. Very large insects, they like to fly high it the treetops. And they are the state butterfly of Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, and South Carolina.

All of the butterflies used in this jewelry are farm-raised, mainly in South America by small farms dedicated to conservation. For every small butterfly farm that makes a living, less Amazon rain forest is cut down. Butterfly farming practices protect the wild butterfly population—the alternative to butterfly farming is netting wild butterflies. These farms are also suppliers to the US based butterfly houses where guests go to interact with live butterflies. Majority of tropical butterflies have a lifespan of less than 3 weeks.
